Victims of the Great Patriotic War were commemorated in Norway

On June 22, 2020, on the nationwide Day of Remembrance of the victims of the Great Patriotic War, the Ambassador Dmitry Mironchik took part in a solemn ceremony, which took place near the Memorial at the Soviet war cemetery, situated on the Norwegian island of Tjøtta.

 

In the presence of representatives of local administration and public the Deputy Major of Alstahaug municipality handed over a capsule containing soil, collected from the largest cemetery of the Soviet soldiers, who died in German captivity and fell during the liberation of the Northern Norway by the Red Army, to the Ambassador of Belarus.

In his speech during the ceremony Dmitry Mironchik welcomed efforts of the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs of Norway on clarifying and complementing lists of names of foreign citizens, buried in the Norwegian territory during World War II. The head of the Belarusian diplomatic mission thanked to Alstahaug municipality for taking good care of the Soviet war cemetery, where about 10400 people rest.

The Ambassador informed that the soil collected at the Memorial will be solemnly placed into the crypt of the All Saints Memorial Church in Minsk on the Day of Independence of our country – the 3rd July, within the framework of the international commemorative campaign “To the Glory of the Common Victory!”.
