Comment by Ambassador Dmitry Mironchik in connection with the decision of the Norwegian Government to start using “Belarus” instead of former “Hviterussland”

30.05.2022

Comment by Ambassador Dmitry Mironchik to the Norwegian channel TV2 in connection with the decision of the Norwegian Government to start using “Belarus” instead of former “Hviterussland” to refer to the Republic of Belarus in official documents:

The norms of the Norwegian language can only be defined by the Norwegian people themselves. We are pleased, however, that the name of our country in Norwegian is now closer to the original in spelling and sound.

As for the political motives of the official Oslo – time will put all the pieces in place. Very soon, no one in Norway will remember them or most probably will prefer to omit them. Meanwhile, the original name of our country will now be known to every Norwegian. And that’s what matters.
