On the commemorative event marking the tragic anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War

22.06.2023

On 22 June 2023, the Embassy of Belarus in Sweden held a commemorative event to mark the mournful anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War and the 80th anniversary of the Khatyn tragedy.

Representatives of the diplomatic corps of the CIS countries in Stockholm, including the Ambassadors of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, the Chargé d'Affaires of Uzbekistan, took part in the ceremony.

Ambassador of Belarus to Sweden Dmitry Mironchik emphasized in his speech the importance of preserving the memory of the tragic events of the Great Patriotic War.

“The tragedy of Khatyn is not an accidental episode of the war. Trying to destroy the statehood, economy and culture of the Belarusian people, the German invaders and their collaborators destroyed and burnt 209 towns and more than 9,200 villages … It is a plan of deliberate genocide.”

The exhibition includes pictures from various years reflecting the memories of the civilian victims of the Nazi invaders and unique documentary evidence of the crimes committed by the occupants on the territory of Belarus during the war years.

Also during the event, participants were presented a series of books “The Genocide of the Belarusian People”, prepared by the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Belarus in the course of the investigation of the criminal case against the Nazi perpetrators and their collaborators who committed genocide against the peaceful population during the Great Patriotic War.

The findings of the criminal case are intended to counter attempts to distort and devalue the historical facts and will help to raise before international organizations the question of recognizing Belarus as a victim of Nazi genocide.
